Earth's Perihelion
Link: Earth's Perihelion
Students explore a scientific phenomenon that occurs once per year, the perihelion. This is otherwise known as the day of the year when the Earth is as close as it will get to the Sun in its orbit.
While clearly exposing students to various core ideas in the 5-ESS1 NGSS strand, this activity also helps students explore measurement. Students work with astronomical units, kilometers and miles to make sense of the perihelion. They also start to explore ratios, calculating how long it would take certain forms of transportation to travel to reach the Sun.
