Food Web
Link: Food Web
Another great resource from NRICH, this activity has students creating food webs and then determining whether they are sustainable.
While the food web creation should be easy for students, the subsequent challenge for students about whether it is sustainable or not may be tricky. Teachers may decide that they want to offer students more clues or create a handout to make the challenge easier to access.
To solve the problem, students will be using basic operations as well as accessing science knowledge, particularly NGSS standard 5-LS2 Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy and Dynamics. Students' model will almost met the expectations for the substandard, "Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment." Teachers will need to extend the lesson slightly to encompass decomposers, microbes and the environment.
