Humongous Vegetables of Alaska

Yummy Math offers an engaging lesson focusing on a phenomenon observed during a trip to Alaska: despite a short growing season, farmers are able to grow massive produce.

From this phenomenon, students examine graphs, data and solve word problems involving the content to determine how such massive produce is possible.

While obviously connecting to measurement and data for Grade 5, this lesson also meets the NGSS standard 5-PS3 Energy. Specifically, students can analyze evidence that helps them recognize "the energy released [from] food was once energy from the sun that was captured by plants in the chemical process that forms plant matter (from air and water)."
