This activity is designed to help students investigate and model mudslides, avalanches and earthquakes. Students simulate equilibrium and instability in different environments. With movers, signallers and observers, there is a role for everyone!
The physics connection is clear, but this activity can also be connected to the NGSS, specifically 5-PS2 Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions. At the Grade 5-level, students can work on their arguments explaining gravitational force.
Additionally, this activity meets the math and science practices centered around modeling.
Math connections can also be made to data, specifically discussions about mean, medians and modes. Additionally, the lesson includes good guiding questions.
